The Agenda with Steve Paikin – “No Honour”:
watch now Headlines call them “honour killings.” Where is the line between honour and murder? As TVO airs the North American premiere of the documentary “Banaz: An Honour Killing,” The Agenda examines Banaz’s personal story, and what lies behind the headlines.

Why It’s Important

Culturally Specific Honour Based Violence Frontline service providers working to eliminate violence against women know that it is crucial to identify signs of lethality and danger in a timely manner. However, without an adequate awareness of how culture factors into violence against women, they often make mistakes in labelling these crimes and can put vulnerable women at more risk rather than providing a safe and effective intervention.

Survivor, Advocate, Educator

For the past 15 years, Aruna Papp, a survivor of honour based violence, advocate, and an educator, has been conducting training for front-line service providers on risk assessment when working with clients of honour-based violence.

” Honour based violence is a crime or incident, which has or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community”.
(The Crown Prosecution Service UK, 2010)
